What is Maca Root?
Maca is a root vegetable grown high in the Andes Mountains of Peru, with a long history of traditional use for energy and vitality among the region's indigenous populations.
What does the research say?
A 2002 randomized, placebo-controlled study published in Andrologia followed healthy men aged 21 to 56 for twelve weeks. Self-reported sexual desire improved from the eighth week onward — notably independent of testosterone, which did not change, and independent of mood scores measured alongside it.
What that means in practice
The implication is straightforward: give Maca eight weeks before drawing conclusions, and don't expect it to register as a change in hormone levels.

Safety considerations
Maca is generally well tolerated. As with any new supplement, consult a doctor before use if you have a thyroid condition, since some sources suggest caution here.
